A precise 19th-century cartographic study of the ancient city of Manduria, featuring detailed annotations and a scale bar.
This cartographic study by Willem Carel Dierkens documents the historical site of Manduria. Executed in ink and watercolour, the work functions as a technical plan rather than a pictorial representation. The drawing outlines the perimeter of the ancient city, identified by the letter A, and provides a clear spatial relationship between the various defensive structures.
Dierkens employs a precise, functional aesthetic. The primary enclosure is rendered in a muted grey wash, while the surrounding features, such as the outer wall and the moats, are delineated with thin, controlled ink lines. The inclusion of a compass rose and a scale bar (Echelle de 100 pas) indicates the document's purpose as a survey of archaeological or historical interest. The legend at the bottom provides a systematic key to the site's components: the ancient city, the village of Casal-nuovo, the outer wall, the primary moat, the inner wall, the secondary moat, and the interval between the two walls.
The composition is sparse, prioritising clarity and information over decorative elements. The use of colour is limited to soft washes of grey and a pale ochre, which serve to differentiate the structural layers of the site. This approach reflects the 19th-century tradition of topographical documentation, where the goal was to record physical dimensions and site layout for academic or administrative review. The work offers a glimpse into the methods used by travellers and scholars of the period to map historical ruins. By stripping away extraneous detail, Dierkens allows the viewer to focus on the geometric configuration of the fortifications. It is a piece of historical record-keeping, capturing the physical reality of the site as it appeared during the artist's period of study.
