A 1601 etching by Hans Sibmacher featuring three geometric needlework patterns from his renowned pattern book, the Schon News Modelbuch.
This etching is Plate 37 from the Schon News Modelbuch, a collection of patterns for needlework and lace published by the Nuremberg artist Hans Sibmacher in 1601. The work displays three distinct vertical designs, each structured on a grid system that mimics the warp and weft of textile production. These patterns were intended as guides for lacemakers and embroiderers, providing a visual vocabulary for the creation of decorative borders or edgings.
The composition is strictly geometric. Sibmacher employs a system of squares and crosses to define the boundaries of each motif. Within these frames, he incorporates floral and star-like shapes, demonstrating the mathematical precision required for early seventeenth-century needlework. The central design features a heart-shaped termination, while the flanking patterns conclude in pointed, V-shaped ends. The repetition of these elements creates a sense of order, reflecting the systematic approach to craft manuals of the period.
Sibmacher was a prominent figure in the dissemination of ornamental designs in early modern Europe. His publications were widely circulated among artisans, providing a standardised reference for complex needlework techniques. The clarity of the lines and the stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface ensure that the patterns remain legible for practical use. This print offers a glimpse into the technical requirements of historical textile arts, where the intersection of geometry and manual skill produced functional beauty. The work is a clear example of the pedagogical function of pattern books, which allowed for the spread of specific aesthetic styles across different regions and social classes during the Renaissance.
