A pair of fourteenth-century Sienese pinnacles depicting angels, rendered in tempera and gold leaf on wood panel.
These two triangular panels represent the work of Niccolò di Segna, a painter active in Siena during the first half of the fourteenth century. As components of a larger polyptych, these pinnacles were designed to occupy the uppermost reaches of an altarpiece, looking down upon the faithful. The figures are depicted against a ground of tooled gold leaf, a technique common to Sienese religious art of the period, which reflects ambient light to create a celestial atmosphere.
The angels are rendered with the characteristic grace of the Sienese tradition. Their features are soft, with elongated proportions and delicate modelling of the facial planes. One angel gazes upwards, while the other holds a stylus, suggesting their roles as messengers or witnesses within a larger theological narrative. The drapery of their garments is handled with a sense of weight and volume, despite the flattened, decorative nature of the gold background. The use of tempera allows for precise, linear detail, particularly in the rendering of the wings and the intricate patterns of the halos.
Niccolò di Segna followed in the tradition of Duccio and his own father, Segna di Bonaventura. His work maintains the stylistic conventions of the Trecento, prioritising spiritual expression over anatomical realism. These panels demonstrate the technical skill required to execute works for ecclesiastical settings, where the interplay between painted surface and gilded ground was intended to evoke a sense of the divine. The triangular format dictates the composition, forcing the figures into a compact, vertical arrangement that fits the architectural constraints of the original altarpiece structure. These prints capture the texture of the original wood panels and the aged quality of the gold leaf, providing a clear view of the brushwork and the specific aesthetic of the Sienese Gothic style.
