Annibale Carracci, a central figure in the development of the Baroque style in Rome, painted this version of the Pietà around 1600. The composition focuses on the Virgin Mary cradling the body of Christ, supported by two small putti. The scene is set within a dark, cavernous space, which directs the viewer's attention to the illuminated figures. Carracci employs a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, where the stark contrast between light and shadow defines the musculature of Christ and the soft folds of the Virgin's robes.

The emotional weight of the work is conveyed through the physical arrangement of the figures. Christ's body is positioned across the lap of the Virgin, a traditional iconographic arrangement that emphasises the human suffering inherent in the narrative.
