A detailed woodblock print from the 1748 'Ehon miyako zōshi' by Nishikawa Sukenobu, depicting domestic life and social customs in Edo-period Kyoto.
This woodblock print originates from the 1748 publication 'Ehon miyako zōshi', or 'Picture Book of Life in the Capital', by the Kyoto-based artist Nishikawa Sukenobu. Sukenobu was a prolific illustrator who produced numerous ehon (picture books) during the mid-Edo period. His work often focused on the daily activities of urban residents, providing a visual record of social customs, fashion, and domestic life in Kyoto.
The composition displays a typical interior scene, rendered with the clean, precise line work characteristic of the period. The scene is divided into distinct zones, showing figures engaged in domestic tasks and social interaction. On the left, women are occupied with preparations, while the right side shows a more formal gathering involving men in traditional attire. The use of space is balanced, with the tatami mat flooring and architectural elements providing a clear sense of depth and structure. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the pages integrates text with the visual narrative, a common feature in Japanese book illustration of the eighteenth century.
Sukenobu was known for his ability to capture the grace of his subjects, particularly in his depictions of women. His influence extended to many later artists of the Ukiyo-e school, who adopted his methods for portraying figures in motion and within architectural settings. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the time, where the arrangement of space and the subtle details of clothing and household objects were given careful attention. The monochrome palette focuses the viewer on the composition and the narrative flow between the two pages, reflecting the refined sensibilities of the Kyoto art scene during the mid-Edo era.
