This woodblock print originates from the Ehon Ranjatai, a publication by the Japanese artist Tsukioka Settei. Active during the mid-to-late eighteenth century, Settei was a painter and printmaker based in Osaka. He is known for his work in the Ukiyo-e style, often focusing on figures and narrative scenes. This specific work demonstrates the characteristic line work of the period, where thin, controlled ink strokes define both the human figures and the surrounding architectural elements.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, a common format for Japanese illustrated books of this era. The left panel depicts a seated figure in traditional attire, positioned within an interior space that includes a low table and a standing lamp. The right panel shows an ethereal, standing figure accompanied by stylized clouds, suggesting a supernatural or legendary narrative.
