The work demonstrates the integration of visual art and literature, specifically the kyōka, a form of light or satirical verse that gained popularity among the urban classes of Japan. Hiroshige, widely recognised for his mastery of the woodblock medium, here shifts his focus from his typical topographical subjects to the daily lives and social customs of the people.
