This woodblock print originates from the 'I Fukyū Ike no Taiga sansui gafu', a collection published by Nakagawa Tenju. The work reflects the Bunjinga (literati painting) tradition in Japan, which drew inspiration from Chinese scholar-official aesthetics. These prints were designed to disseminate the techniques and compositions of masters like Ike no Taiga and the Chinese painter Yi Fujiu to a wider audience of students and collectors.
The visual composition follows the conventions of traditional ink painting, adapted for the woodblock medium. The right page features a vertical rock formation, rendered with expressive, dry-brush strokes that suggest texture and age. A small dwelling sits at the base, providing a sense of scale against the towering stone. The left page presents a more open, atmospheric view, with distant hills and a solitary boatman on the water. The use of line is deliberate, balancing the calligraphic quality of the brushwork with the structural requirements of woodblock carving.
Textual elements are integrated into the composition, a hallmark of the literati style where poetry and painting function as a unified expression.
