A detailed 1806 botanical engraving of Phytolacca decandra, featuring hand-coloured illustrations of the plant's flowers and berries.
This hand-coloured copperplate engraving originates from The Botanical Magazine, a publication founded by William Curtis in 1787. The print, identified as Plate 931, depicts the American pokeweed, Phytolacca decandra. Francis Sansom, a prolific engraver for the magazine during the early nineteenth century, executed the plate after a drawing by Sydenham Edwards. The publication date of June 1806 is inscribed at the base of the sheet.
The composition presents a clear, scientific view of the plant, showing both the flowering raceme and the developing fruit. The artist employs a precise, clean line quality typical of the period, allowing for the application of watercolour washes that define the botanical features. The deep green of the foliage contrasts with the pale, delicate petals of the flowers and the dark, purple-black berries. The engraving captures the structural details of the stem and the veining of the leaves with accuracy, adhering to the magazine's objective of providing reliable visual records for naturalists and gardeners.
Botanical illustrations of this era were produced to document the growing number of exotic species introduced to British gardens. The process involved an initial engraving on a copper plate, followed by the careful hand-colouring of each print by a team of colourists. This method ensured that the final image remained faithful to the original observation. The paper retains the characteristic texture of the period, providing a neutral background that allows the botanical subject to remain the primary focus. This print offers a view into the systematic study of plant life during the Regency period, documenting the appearance of the pokeweed with technical precision.
