A detailed reproduction of a fifteenth-century manuscript illumination by Jean Fouquet, depicting a royal regency appointment with classic French heraldic motifs.
This miniature, attributed to the French master Jean Fouquet, originates from the Grandes Chroniques de France. It depicts the historical moment when Philippe de Valois is appointed regent. Fouquet, active in the mid-fifteenth century, is recognised for his ability to merge the stylistic conventions of the Northern Renaissance with the emerging perspective techniques of the Italian Quattrocento.
The composition is divided by architectural elements, specifically two prominent columns that frame the scene. This structural choice creates a sense of depth and order, separating the figures into distinct groups. To the left, Philippe de Valois stands in a formal blue robe, while the right side features a queenly figure in a gown trimmed with ermine. The background is adorned with a deep blue textile patterned with golden fleurs-de-lis, a symbol of the French monarchy that provides a consistent visual anchor for the scene.
Fouquet pays close attention to the textures of the garments, from the heavy folds of the robes to the delicate trim of the royal attire. The figures are rendered with a focus on individual expression and posture, moving away from the more stylised depictions common in earlier medieval illumination. The use of gold leaf in the architectural framing adds a sense of physical weight and luxury to the work, typical of the high-status commissions Fouquet received during his career. This print captures the precision of the original vellum work, preserving the clarity of the figures and the depth of the blue pigments used by the artist. It offers a view into the visual culture of the French court during the late medieval period, demonstrating the technical skill required to produce such detailed narrative scenes on a small scale.
