A refined eighteenth-century mezzotint portrait of the Comte de Caylus, captured in profile by French artist Édouard Gautier d'Agoty.
This portrait depicts Philippe-Claude-Anne de Thubières, Comte de Caylus, a French aristocrat and military officer. The work is a mezzotint, a printmaking process that allows for subtle gradations of tone and shadow. Édouard Gautier d'Agoty, a member of a family known for their contributions to anatomical illustration and colour printing, utilised the medium to create a soft, atmospheric effect around the subject.
The Comte de Caylus is shown in profile, facing right. He wears a powdered wig styled in the fashion of the mid-eighteenth century, with curls cascading towards his shoulders. His attire consists of a formal coat and a cravat, rendered with the characteristic softness of the mezzotint technique. The dark, moody background provides a stark contrast to the illuminated features of the sitter, drawing the eye to the profile and the texture of the wig.
Gautier d'Agoty was part of a family that experimented with multi-colour printing, though this specific piece relies on the tonal depth of black and white ink. The composition follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture from the period, focusing on the dignity and status of the individual. The inscription at the base identifies the sitter clearly, a common practice in eighteenth-century portrait prints intended for circulation among the nobility and the educated public. The print captures the quiet authority of the Comte, presenting him with a sense of composure. The technical execution demonstrates the skill required to manipulate the copper plate to achieve such smooth transitions between light and dark areas, a hallmark of the mezzotint method during the Enlightenment era.
