Phi, created by Morris Louis in 1960, represents the artist's mature exploration of the stain technique. Louis applied Magna, an acrylic resin paint, directly onto unprimed canvas. This method allowed the pigment to soak into the fibres rather than sitting on the surface, creating a fusion between the colour and the support. The composition features diagonal bands of colour that appear to drift across the white ground, leaving the texture of the canvas visible beneath the paint.

This work belongs to the series often categorised as the Unfurleds. In these paintings, Louis arranged ribbons of colour along the edges of the canvas, leaving a large, empty centre. The interaction between the saturated hues and the negative space creates a sense of expansion. The colours do not overlap in a traditional sense; instead, they maintain their individual clarity while participating in a rhythmic arrangement. The diagonal orientation of the bands suggests movement, yet the stillness of the white space provides a counterpoint to this energy.

Louis worked in Washington, D.C., away from the primary art centres of the time. His approach to painting prioritised the physical properties of the medium and the optical experience of the viewer. By removing the brushstroke as a record of the artist's hand, he shifted the focus to the pure presence of colour. The title, Phi, refers to the Greek letter, often associated with mathematical proportions, though the painting itself remains non-representational.
