A dramatic ink and silk study by Kawanabe Kyōsai, depicting the intense struggle between a pheasant and a snake.
Kawanabe Kyōsai was a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, known for his technical skill and his unconventional approach to traditional subjects. This work, depicting a pheasant ensnared by a snake, belongs to the kachō-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. Unlike the serene depictions often found in earlier iterations of this style, Kyōsai introduces a sense of immediate tension and predatory struggle.
The composition centres on the physical entanglement of the two creatures. The snake coils tightly around the pheasant, its body creating a rhythmic, circular motion that draws the eye inward. Kyōsai employs a calligraphic brush technique to define the feathers of the bird and the scales of the serpent, demonstrating his ability to capture texture through ink wash and precise line work. The background remains sparse, featuring only a few bamboo stalks to suggest a natural setting without distracting from the primary action.
Kyōsai was trained in both the Kanō school and the ukiyo-e tradition, and this piece reflects that dual influence. The disciplined ink application and the careful observation of animal anatomy reveal his academic training, while the dramatic, almost theatrical nature of the encounter aligns with his reputation for eccentricity. The use of light colour is restrained, applied primarily to the pheasant's head and the subtle markings of the snake, which keeps the focus on the monochromatic strength of the ink. This print captures a moment of raw nature, presented with the precision and artistic control characteristic of Kyōsai's later career.
