A sixteenth-century Flemish woodcut depicting a gathering of saints, framed by a decorative red border, produced by the workshop of Christoffel Plantijn.
This woodcut, associated with the workshop of the renowned printer Christoffel Plantijn, depicts a gathering of saints, including Saint Peter, Saint John the Evangelist, Saint Paul, and John the Baptist. The composition is typical of sixteenth-century Flemish book illustration, where religious iconography was often presented within a decorative border. The central figures are rendered with clear, linear precision, reflecting the technical requirements of woodblock printing during the period. Saint Peter is identifiable by the keys he holds, while John the Baptist is shown with his traditional attributes. The surrounding figures are tightly grouped, creating a sense of density that is balanced by the structured, repetitive patterns of the red-inked frame.
Plantijn, based in Antwerp, operated one of the most significant printing houses in Europe. His publications often utilised high-quality woodcuts to accompany theological and classical texts. This print demonstrates the collaborative nature of such workshops, where designers and block cutters worked to produce imagery that was both didactic and aesthetically refined. The use of a secondary colour for the border suggests this was likely intended for a high-quality edition, perhaps a prayer book or a liturgical volume. The lines are deliberate and functional, prioritising clarity of form over atmospheric depth. This approach ensures that the figures remain distinct even when printed on paper of varying quality. The work provides a view into the visual culture of the Counter-Reformation era, where the depiction of saints served as a primary means of religious instruction and devotion for the literate public. The preservation of such prints allows for an analysis of the graphic techniques employed by Flemish artisans to maintain consistency across large-scale printing projects.
