A fine art print of classical Nasta'liq calligraphy by Mir Ali Tabrizi, featuring intricate gold-leaf illumination and delicate marginal animal motifs.
This piece displays the Nasta'liq script, a style of Persian calligraphy attributed to the master Mir Ali Tabrizi. Active during the late 14th and early 15th centuries, Tabrizi is credited with codifying the proportions and aesthetic rules of this script, which became the standard for Persian literary manuscripts. The text is presented in a diagonal orientation, a common practice in classical Persian book arts to create a sense of movement and visual rhythm across the page.
The central panel contains the primary text, executed in black ink against a gold-flecked background. The surrounding margins, known as the illumination or tazhib, feature delicate floral motifs and small animal figures, including gazelles and birds. These marginal decorations are contained within a grid of thin, red-inked lines, providing a structured frame for the fluid, curved strokes of the calligraphy. The use of gold leaf and subtle earth-toned pigments reflects the high level of craftsmanship found in royal workshops of the Timurid period.
This print captures the balance between the bold, sweeping lines of the script and the fine, repetitive detail of the illuminated border. The composition relies on the contrast between the dense, dark ink of the letters and the lighter, decorative elements of the paper. It represents a period where the written word was treated with the same artistic rigour as painting or architecture. The work functions as both a literary document and a visual object, designed to be appreciated for the technical skill required to execute such precise, flowing forms. The preservation of these details allows for an examination of the historical techniques used in traditional Persian manuscript production.
