A woodblock print from the 1804 Yamato jinbutsu gafu by Yamaguchi Soken, depicting figures observing a coastal scene.
This woodblock print originates from the second series of the Yamato jinbutsu gafu, or People of Yamato Picture Album, published in 1804. Yamaguchi Soken, a prominent artist of the Maruyama-Shijo school in Kyoto, produced these volumes to document the diverse figures and customs of Japanese society. The work reflects the school's focus on observation and a naturalistic approach to human form, which departed from the more stylised conventions of the contemporary Ukiyo-e schools in Edo.
The composition depicts two figures standing beneath the boughs of a pine tree, their hands raised in a gesture of reverence or observation. They look out toward a coastal scene where waves break against a shoreline under a crescent moon. A rake lies on the ground near the figures, suggesting their connection to the land or a specific seasonal task. Soken employs a clean, calligraphic line to define the folds of the garments and the texture of the pine needles. The background remains sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the figures and their environment.
Soken was a student of Maruyama Okyo, and his work often carries the influence of his teacher's emphasis on sketching from life. This print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where the artist's brushwork is translated into crisp, black ink lines on paper. The album serves as a record of the aesthetic and social interests of the period, capturing moments of daily life with a sense of quietude. The balance between the foreground figures and the atmospheric coastal setting creates a narrative quality, typical of the illustrated books produced in the late Edo period.
