A 1907 oil painting by George Bellows depicting the industrial construction of Pennsylvania Station in New York City.
George Bellows painted Pennsylvania Excavation in 1907, a period when he focused on the rapid transformation of New York City. This work captures the construction of the Pennsylvania Station terminal, a massive engineering project that reshaped the urban environment. Bellows depicts the site as a deep, cavernous pit, filled with the machinery and labour required for such an undertaking.
The composition emphasises the scale of the excavation through a high vantage point, looking down into the earth. The palette consists of muted greys, browns, and whites, reflecting the industrial atmosphere and the winter conditions of the site. Thick, gestural brushwork defines the piles of excavated earth and the plumes of steam rising from the machinery. These vertical accents of white smoke provide a contrast to the dark, heavy forms of the construction equipment and the surrounding rock.
As a member of the Ashcan School, Bellows sought to document the realities of modern life in America. He avoided the polished aesthetic of academic painting, preferring to capture the raw energy of the city. The figures in the foreground are small, almost anonymous, dwarfed by the sheer size of the construction site. This choice directs the viewer's attention to the process of building itself, rather than the individual workers. The painting functions as a record of the physical labour and the mechanical power that drove the expansion of the city at the turn of the twentieth century. It remains a direct observation of the changing urban fabric, rendered with a focus on texture and atmosphere rather than precise detail.
