A detailed eighteenth-century calligraphic work by Jacob Willem Strunck, featuring the name Overijssel framed by heraldic motifs and allegorical figures.
This work, titled Pennekunst voor Overijssel, demonstrates the technical precision associated with eighteenth-century Dutch calligraphic art. Jacob Willem Strunck, a master of the pen, constructed this piece as a formal presentation of the province name, Overijssel. The composition centres on the word itself, rendered in a decorative, gothic-inspired script that is surrounded by elaborate flourishes and scrollwork.
The frame surrounding the central text functions as an architectural border. It incorporates heraldic elements, including the provincial coat of arms, and allegorical figures that reflect the regional identity of the Netherlands during this period. Two circular vignettes are positioned on the left and right sides of the border, depicting small rural scenes that provide a sense of place. The artist utilised a variety of line weights to create depth, from the fine, hair-like strokes of the calligraphic swirls to the heavier, more defined lines of the structural frame.
Strunck was known for his ability to combine text with complex ornamental motifs. This piece is representative of the penmanship exercises and presentation documents popular among the Dutch elite and administrative bodies of the time. The balance between the rigid, formal heraldry and the fluid, organic lines of the script creates a visual rhythm. The work remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship applied to administrative and commemorative documents in the late eighteenth century. It serves as a record of the aesthetic values of the period, where the art of the pen was held in high regard for its ability to convey authority and regional pride through visual means.
