A delicate study of a blossoming pear tree in Arles, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888 using his signature textured brushwork.
Painted in April 1888, shortly after his arrival in Arles, this work captures the fleeting arrival of spring in Provence. Vincent van Gogh produced a series of orchard paintings during this period, fascinated by the sudden transformation of the trees as they burst into flower. The composition focuses on a single, slender pear tree, its branches laden with white blossoms that contrast against the pale, textured ground.
Van Gogh employs his characteristic impasto technique, applying paint with visible, rhythmic strokes that provide the surface with a tactile quality. The palette is dominated by soft ochres, muted yellows, and pale blues, reflecting the specific light of the southern French spring. The background features a stone wall and a glimpse of a fence, elements that ground the tree within a domestic garden setting. The artist's interest in Japanese woodblock prints is evident here, particularly in the flattened perspective and the deliberate placement of the tree against the backdrop.
Unlike his later, more turbulent works, this piece maintains a sense of quiet observation. The focus remains on the structural form of the tree and the delicate nature of the petals. By capturing the tree in its early stages of growth, Van Gogh documents a specific moment in the seasonal cycle. The work remains a clear example of his ability to translate the natural world into a personal visual language through colour and brushwork. The signature 'Vincent' appears in the lower left corner, a common practice for the artist during his time in Arles.
