A traditional fan painting by Mei Qing, depicting the rugged peaks and pine-covered cliffs of Mount Huang in ink and colour.
Mei Qing, a prominent figure of the Huangshan School during the early Qing dynasty, produced this fan painting depicting the craggy, mist-shrouded terrain of Mount Huang. The composition adheres to the traditional fan format, which requires the artist to balance the curvature of the paper with the verticality of the mountain peaks. Mei Qing employs a technique that combines dry brushwork for the rock faces with softer, washes of ink and light colour to suggest the atmospheric conditions of the mountain range.
The imagery focuses on the jagged, vertical formations characteristic of the Huangshan region. Pine trees, often associated with longevity and resilience in Chinese art, cling to the precipices. A small structure is perched upon a cliff, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the vast, natural environment. The ink work is precise, demonstrating the artist's control over the brush to define texture and form without relying on excessive detail. The colour palette remains restrained, using muted tones to maintain the focus on the structural integrity of the peaks and the surrounding void.
This work reflects the artist's deep familiarity with the topography of Mount Huang, a subject he returned to throughout his career. The calligraphic inscriptions in the upper right corner provide context and identify the work, integrating text with the visual elements of the painting. The fan format itself was a popular medium for literati artists, allowing for intimate, portable expressions of their engagement with the natural world. By capturing the interplay between solid rock and shifting mist, Mei Qing conveys the specific character of the mountain while maintaining the stylistic conventions of the period.
