This work originates from the Kalighat school of painting, a style that emerged in the nineteenth century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. These paintings were produced by itinerant artists known as patuas, who created accessible imagery for pilgrims and visitors to the city. The style is defined by its bold, sweeping brushwork, simplified forms, and the use of mineral pigments on mill-made paper.

The scene depicts the Hindu deity Shiva and his consort, Parvati. Shiva is shown with his characteristic blue skin, wearing a tiger-skin garment, while Parvati is adorned in a traditional sari. The artist employs a flat, two-dimensional perspective, focusing on the rhythmic lines of the figures rather than anatomical realism. The figures are positioned against a plain background, which directs attention to the ritual gesture of the garland exchange. The outlines are fluid and confident, a hallmark of the Kalighat technique, which often involved rapid execution to meet the high demand of the local market.

Kalighat paintings frequently combined traditional mythological subjects with contemporary social commentary. While this piece remains strictly within the realm of religious iconography, it shares the characteristic aesthetic of the school: a synthesis of indigenous folk traditions and the influence of British colonial art education. The colour palette is restrained, relying on ochre, deep purple, and blue tones to define the figures.
