Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, captures the physical transformation of Paris during the late nineteenth century in this work. The painting depicts the construction of the Rue Réaumur, a project that necessitated the demolition of existing structures to accommodate modern urban planning. Luce focuses on the raw, unpolished reality of the building site rather than the finished boulevards often favoured by his contemporaries.

His paintings demonstrate a fascination with light and colour and an interest in capturing the atmosphere of his subjects.
