Created in 1921, this woodcut by M.C. Escher represents an early stage in the career of the Dutch graphic artist. Before he became known for his mathematical explorations of tessellation and impossible geometry, Escher produced works that leaned into symbolic and narrative themes. This piece depicts the biblical Garden of Eden, featuring Adam and Eve at the centre, joined by a diverse array of animals including a camel, a tiger, a lion, and an owl perched above them.

The composition is defined by a strong sense of symmetry and a decorative approach to natural forms. Escher uses the woodcut medium to create high-contrast imagery, where the black ink against the white paper emphasises the silhouettes of the figures and the stylised foliage.
