Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented the world's flora with scientific precision. This work depicts the papyrus plants (Cyperus papyrus) found along the Ciane River in Sicily. North travelled extensively during the late nineteenth century, often working in oil on board to capture the specific characteristics of plants in their natural habitats. Her approach prioritised accurate observation over the romanticised conventions common in the art of her era.

The composition frames the river, with dense clusters of papyrus rising on either side. The tall, slender stems terminate in feathery umbels, which North renders with careful attention to their structural form. The water reflects the muted greens and browns of the reeds, while the sky remains a pale, clear blue. The perspective draws the viewer into the centre of the river, where a smaller island of vegetation sits in the distance. Unlike many of her contemporaries who focused on garden specimens, North sought out plants in remote locations.
