A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert, depicting the mythological figure of Pan playing his flute for a flock of goats and sheep.
This engraving by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert depicts the mythological figure of Pan, the god of the wild, shepherds, and flocks. Based on a composition by the Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens, the work captures a pastoral scene where Pan sits beneath the shade of a large tree, playing his flute. He is surrounded by a small group of goats and sheep, which reinforces his role as a guardian of the herd. The artist employs precise, controlled lines to define the textures of the animals' fur, the rough bark of the trees, and the soft foliage overhead.
Bolswert was a master of the burin, and his technical skill is evident in the way he translates Jordaens's painterly style into the medium of engraving. The composition balances the seated figure of Pan on the left with the natural surroundings on the right, creating a sense of harmony between the divine and the animal world. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides a classical framing for the scene, describing Pan as he sits under the beech tree, producing music that delights his flock. The shading techniques, particularly the use of cross-hatching, give the image a sense of depth and volume, typical of the high-quality printmaking produced in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century.
This print offers a glimpse into the period's fascination with classical mythology and the idealised pastoral life. The attention to detail, from the expression on Pan's face to the individual leaves on the branches, demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship expected from Bolswert's workshop. It is a fine example of how printmakers of the era disseminated the works of major painters to a wider audience, preserving the visual narratives of the Baroque period through the medium of black and white engraving.
