Beschreibung
A striking abstract work by Cy Twombly, featuring intense red gestural crayon marks contrasted against a sparse, inscribed lower field.
Cy Twombly, an American artist who spent much of his career in Italy, developed a distinct visual language that bridges the gap between drawing and painting. Pan II, created in 1975, displays his characteristic use of gestural marks and layered media. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper section features a dense, swirling mass of red crayon, creating a sense of kinetic energy and raw, physical presence. This area suggests a floral or organic form, though it remains firmly within the realm of abstraction.
The lower section of the work provides a stark contrast. It is composed of a cleaner, lighter ground, marked by faint graphite inscriptions and a singular, dark, organic blotch. This juxtaposition of chaotic, energetic mark-making against a more restrained, almost clinical space is a hallmark of Twombly's approach. His work often references classical mythology, literature, and history, yet he avoids literal representation. Instead, he focuses on the act of mark-making itself, treating the surface of the paper as a site for recording movement and thought.
Twombly's technique involves a repetitive, rhythmic application of media. The red crayon lines overlap and intersect, building up a texture that feels both spontaneous and deliberate. The presence of the graphite text, though barely legible, adds a layer of conceptual depth, grounding the abstract forms in the human impulse to record and name. This piece captures the tension between the visceral, emotional power of colour and the intellectual structure of the written word. It is a study in balance, where the weight of the red mass is countered by the emptiness of the lower field, creating a dialogue between presence and absence.
