A 1791 etching by Francesco Novelli, serving as a promotional pamphlet for a series of Rembrandt reproductions.
This etching serves as a promotional pamphlet for a series of reproductions of Rembrandt's works. Francesco Novelli, alongside Costantino Cumano and Giuseppe Sardi, produced these copies to preserve the technical mastery of the Dutch master. The central image depicts a violinist accompanied by a small dog, a motif directly inspired by Rembrandt's own etchings of street musicians. The figure is rendered with fine, expressive lines that capture the texture of his clothing and the posture of the animal.
Below the illustration, the text addresses collectors and enthusiasts of the fine arts. It explains the project's intent: to make high-quality copies of Rembrandt's rare etchings accessible to a wider audience. The text notes that these copies were based on originals once held by Jan Pietersz Zoomer and later by the Zanetti collection. By documenting these works, Novelli sought to ensure the survival of Rembrandt's techniques regarding light and shadow, which he describes as an imitation of nature previously unseen in the work of other artists.
The document is dated 15 June 1791 and provides practical information for prospective buyers, noting that the prints were available at the house of Pietro Antonio Novelli in Venice. The etching reflects the late eighteenth-century interest in cataloguing and reproducing historical masterworks for educational and commercial purposes. The composition is sparse, focusing the viewer's attention on the figure of the musician before transitioning to the detailed Italian text. This piece is a significant example of the printmaking culture in Venice during the late eighteenth century, demonstrating the technical skill required to replicate the nuanced line work of the seventeenth-century Dutch school.
