A woman kneels on a tatami mat, carefully applying ink to the eyes of a small rabbit sculpted from snow. A child stands beside her, holding the tray that supports the snow figure, while a second woman stands nearby, observing the process. The presence of a shamisen leaning against the wall suggests a setting within a refined household.
The composition balances the figures against a snowy exterior visible through the open sliding doors. Koryūsai employs a muted palette, allowing the red of the child's kimono and the woman's collar to provide visual contrast against the soft greens and greys of the interior. The snow-covered branches outside provide a seasonal context, reinforcing the ephemeral nature of the snow rabbit itself.
Koryūsai, a former samurai who transitioned to professional printmaking, is known for his mastery of the hashira-e (pillar print) format and his depictions of bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). This painting demonstrates his ability to render domestic life with precision and grace. The lines are controlled and deliberate, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus remains on the harmony between the human subjects and their immediate environment. The work reflects the cultural practice of creating snow sculptures, a popular winter pastime in Edo-period Japan.
