A nineteenth-century ink and wash drawing by Mari ten Kate, depicting a quiet, flooded Dutch village scene with a small boat in the foreground.
Mari ten Kate, a Dutch artist active during the nineteenth century, produced this study of a flooded village using ink and wash. The work captures the quiet, melancholic atmosphere of a rural settlement submerged by rising waters. The composition relies on a restrained palette of sepia tones, which allows the artist to focus on the interplay between the architectural forms of the cottages and the reflective surface of the water.
The scene depicts several traditional thatched-roof houses partially inundated. A small boat carrying two figures occupies the foreground, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the desolate environment. The church tower in the distance serves as a vertical anchor, contrasting with the horizontal expanse of the flood. Ten Kate employs fluid, calligraphic ink lines to define the structures, while the wash is applied in varying degrees of transparency to suggest depth and the murky quality of the water.
This drawing reflects the interest of Dutch artists in the environmental challenges posed by their geography. Flooding was a recurring theme in the art of the period, often treated with a focus on the resilience of rural communities. The technique here is direct and unadorned, prioritising the observation of light and form over decorative detail. The paper remains largely visible, contributing to the overall sense of airiness and the damp, overcast conditions typical of such events. As a study, it offers a glimpse into the artist's process, showing how he used simple materials to convey a specific mood and narrative. The work remains a clear example of nineteenth-century Dutch draughtsmanship, where the economy of means is used to achieve a high degree of atmospheric clarity.
