A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the tragic mythological moment when Orpheus loses Eurydice to the underworld.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts the tragic moment from Ovid's Metamorphoses when Orpheus, having nearly led his wife Eurydice out of the underworld, turns to look at her, thereby causing her to be dragged back into the shadows. Tempesta, a Florentine artist known for his prolific output of prints, captures the narrative with a sense of dramatic urgency. In the foreground, Orpheus walks forward, his posture reflecting a sudden, fatal hesitation. Behind him, Eurydice is seized by a demonic figure, her arms raised in despair. The background features the three-headed hound Cerberus, a classic symbol of the underworld, set against a cavernous, rocky environment.
Tempesta utilised a dense system of cross-hatching to define the forms and create the dark, oppressive atmosphere of the subterranean realm. The lines are precise and rhythmic, characteristic of his technical approach to etching. The composition is structured to lead the eye from the forward-moving Orpheus back to the chaotic struggle occurring behind him. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base, 'Euridice (respiciente Orpheo) ad inferos reuocatur', identifies the scene and provides a scholarly context common to print series of the period. This work demonstrates Tempesta's ability to condense complex mythological narratives into a single, legible image. His work was widely circulated across Europe, influencing later generations of printmakers and artists who sought to depict classical themes with clarity and narrative force. The print remains a fine example of early seventeenth-century Italian graphic art, reflecting the period's interest in classical literature and the technical possibilities of the etching medium.
