A late fifteenth-century engraving by Monogrammist HW, featuring a lion and a ram amidst dense, scrolling foliage.
This engraving by the artist known as Monogrammist HW dates to the late fifteenth century. It belongs to a period when German printmakers produced small, highly detailed works intended for use as patterns by goldsmiths, metalworkers, and other artisans. The composition features a lion and a ram positioned within a dense field of scrolling foliage and prickly leaves.
The artist employs a precise engraving technique to differentiate between the textures of the animals and the surrounding plant forms. The lion, depicted with a full mane, faces the ram, which is shown with curled horns. Both creatures are integrated into the decorative framework, which fills the entire rectangular space. The background consists of tightly coiled, thorny vegetation that creates a sense of depth through overlapping forms rather than linear perspective. This style of ornament, often referred to as 'foliage scrollwork', was common in late Gothic decorative arts.
Monogrammist HW remains an elusive figure, identified only by the initials appearing on works of this nature. Such prints were often circulated among workshops to provide motifs for decorative objects, including book bindings, jewellery, and ecclesiastical metalwork. The focus here is on the balance between the naturalistic rendering of the animals and the stylised, rhythmic quality of the surrounding plant life. The work demonstrates the technical proficiency of early printmakers who worked on a miniature scale, using the burin to create fine lines that define both the musculature of the animals and the sharp edges of the leaves. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the late fifteenth century, where the boundaries between fine art and functional design were fluid.
