A significant figure in the Kamakura period, Sesson Yūbai spent time in Yuan-dynasty China, where he studied Chan Buddhism and refined his mastery of the brush. Upon his return to Japan, he became a prominent voice in the Gozan literature movement, which integrated Chinese poetic traditions with Japanese monastic life.
