Beschreibung
A 1918 Cubist composition by Albert Gleizes, featuring geometric fragmentation and a rhythmic arrangement of blue, black, and ochre planes.
Albert Gleizes, a central figure in the development of Cubism, produced this work in 1918. The composition demonstrates his approach to the fragmentation of form and the synthesis of multiple viewpoints. Rather than attempting a realistic depiction of a vessel, Gleizes breaks the subject into geometric planes and intersecting arcs. The blue tones dominate the canvas, suggesting the movement of water and the atmosphere surrounding the boat.
Within the central mass, the artist employs varied textures and patterns. These include stippled areas, parallel lines, and solid blocks of colour. The interplay between these textures creates a sense of rhythm across the surface. The diagonal lines, particularly the yellow mast-like element, provide a structural anchor for the otherwise shifting, non-representational arrangement of shapes. This work reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between the object and the space it occupies, a theme he explored throughout his career.
Gleizes was not only a painter but also a theorist who co-authored 'Du Cubisme' with Jean Metzinger. His work often sought to reconcile the analytical nature of early Cubism with a more decorative, rhythmic sensibility. In this piece, the viewer observes a departure from the monochromatic palettes of earlier Cubist experiments. The use of blue, black, and ochre creates a balanced visual field. The painting avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flat, ornamental construction that emphasises the two-dimensional nature of the canvas. By deconstructing the sailboat into its essential geometric components, Gleizes invites the viewer to engage with the painting as an autonomous object rather than a window into a scene. The result is a study in balance, rhythm, and the structural potential of colour.
