A 1892 lithographic cover design by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst, featuring a stylised female figure and decorative typography in the Art Nouveau style.
This lithograph serves as the cover design for the 1892 catalogue of the Keuze-tentoonstelling (Selection Exhibition) of contemporary Dutch art. Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst, a prominent figure in the Dutch decorative arts movement, employs a distinct graphic language that reflects the transition toward Art Nouveau. The composition features a solitary female figure in traditional attire, positioned against a stylised sunburst. The use of bold, flat black shapes for the figure and trees creates a strong contrast with the lighter background, while the red typography provides a rhythmic balance to the visual elements.
The design demonstrates the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, particularly in its emphasis on the unity of text and image. The lettering is integrated into the pictorial space, following the organic, flowing lines characteristic of the period. The figure stands in a field, with simple floral motifs scattered across the foreground, suggesting a connection between the human subject and the natural world. The work is a clear example of the graphic experimentation occurring in the Netherlands during the late nineteenth century, where artists sought to elevate the status of commercial design through careful composition and symbolic imagery.
Roland Holst was deeply involved in the social and artistic debates of his time, and his work often carried a sense of moral or cultural purpose. This specific design, with its clear, legible typography and balanced arrangement, shows his ability to combine decorative appeal with functional requirements. The print captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the 1890s, where the influence of Japanese woodblock prints and the desire for a modern, national style of graphic art converged. It remains a representative piece of Dutch graphic design from the fin de siècle era.
