A masterful 1919 etching by Swedish artist Anders Zorn, depicting a musician named Ols Maria with characteristic fluid lines and dramatic light.
Anders Zorn, a Swedish master of the etching medium, produced this portrait of Ols Maria in 1919. Zorn is recognised for his ability to capture light and texture through the economy of line. In this work, the subject is depicted playing a stringed instrument, her expression caught in a moment of concentration. The background remains largely obscured, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the figure and the physical act of music-making.
Zorn utilised a technique of rapid, directional hatching to model the form of the sitter and the contours of the instrument. The lines vary in density, creating a sense of depth and shadow that defines the volume of the figure against the dark, atmospheric space. His approach to printmaking often involved a directness that mirrored his oil painting practice, prioritising the immediate impression of the subject over excessive detail. Anders Zorn
Zorn painted three sitting American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. For a Swedish painter from a small town in Dalarna, the commissions represented an extraordinary international reach, built on a reputation as one of the finest portrait painters and etchers of his generation.
He was born in Mora in 1860, studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and worked across Paris, London and the United States. His ability to render water and flesh with loose, confident brushwork set him apart from more academic contemporaries. His etchings, numbering roughly three hundred, are considered among the finest of the period.
He returned to Mora later in life, establishing a museum and open-air museum there. The Zorn Museum remains a major cultural institution in Sweden. He died in Mora in 1920, at sixty.
