Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, painted this view of the Old Walton Bridge during his extended stay in England between 1746 and 1755. The work depicts the wooden bridge designed by William Etheridge, which spanned the River Thames in Surrey. Canaletto, primarily recognised for his precise views of Venice, applied his methodical approach to the English countryside, capturing the structural geometry of the bridge against the atmospheric conditions of the British sky.

The composition balances the architectural form of the bridge with the natural surroundings. The riverbank in the foreground features figures engaged in daily activities, including boatmen and individuals with livestock, which provides a sense of scale and local context. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, rendered with soft, billowing clouds that suggest a shifting light. This treatment of the atmosphere demonstrates the artist's ability to adapt his Venetian training to the specific qualities of light found in the Thames Valley.

Canaletto utilised a palette of muted earth tones, greens, and greys to represent the river and the foliage. The bridge itself is painted with careful attention to its lattice-like construction, reflecting the engineering interests of the period.
