Old Trees by a Cool Spring - Li Shixing

Li Shixing, a painter active during the Yuan Dynasty, produced this work in 1320. The composition focuses on two gnarled trees, their forms rendered with precise, dry brushwork that emphasises the texture of aged bark and twisted branches. The artist employs a muted palette, typical of the period, where ink washes create subtle gradations of tone against the silk support.

In the lower left, a small stream flows past jagged rocks, providing a sense of scale and quiet movement. The trees dominate the vertical space, their skeletal limbs reaching upward. This approach reflects the literati tradition, where the artist sought to express personal character and inner state through the depiction of natural subjects. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper right corner is an integral part of the work, connecting the visual image with poetic or scholarly commentary.

The technique demonstrates a mastery of ink control, balancing the dark, concentrated strokes of the tree trunks with the lighter, more ethereal application of wash in the background. The silk surface has aged to a warm, golden-brown tone, which harmonises with the ink.
