A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting the Yahagi Bridge at Okazaki, a station on the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the post station of Okazaki, a location on the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition focuses on the Yahagi Bridge, which was known as the longest bridge on the entire route during the Edo period. Hokusai presents a elevated perspective, allowing the viewer to observe the procession of travellers crossing the structure while simultaneously taking in the surrounding topography.
The print features the characteristic aesthetic of early nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock production. Hokusai employs a clear, linear approach to define the architectural elements of the bridge and the distant buildings. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of soft yellows, muted greens, and a distinct red for the horizontal cloud bands that divide the visual space. These bands serve to organise the composition into distinct zones, separating the foreground activity from the distant hills and the coastal area.
Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai’s interpretation of the Tokaido stations often incorporates a sense of graphic clarity and simplified form. The figures on the bridge are rendered with minimal detail, functioning as rhythmic elements within the larger structure of the image. The inclusion of the castle in the background provides a sense of place, grounding the scene in the specific geography of the Mikawa Province. This work offers a view into the travel culture of the period, capturing the movement of people across the infrastructure that facilitated communication and commerce across Japan. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour block is aligned to create a cohesive image of a well-known travel destination.
