Okabe: Narrow Ivy-covered Road at Mount Utsu - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print is part of the series Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations, often referred to as the Vertical Tokaido. Produced in 1855, this collection represents a shift in Hiroshige's approach to the well-trodden route between Edo and Kyoto. Unlike his earlier horizontal series, these vertical compositions allow for a different sense of scale, focusing on the steep inclines and narrow passages that defined the journey through the mountains.

The scene depicts the path at Mount Utsu, near Okabe. A narrow, winding trail cuts through the terrain, flanked by dense foliage and steep rock faces. Travellers are shown making their way along the path, their small figures providing a sense of the immense scale of the surrounding geography. A small, thatched structure sits quietly to the side, offering a brief respite for those traversing the pass. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, greys, and muted greens to convey the atmosphere of a mountain morning. A hint of pink at the horizon suggests the early light of dawn, contrasting with the cool tones of the shadowed valley.

Hiroshige uses the vertical format to draw the eye upward, following the slope of the mountain toward the sky. The composition balances the natural forms of the trees and rocks with the human activity on the road. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with fine lines used to detail the textures of the trees and the rugged surface of the path. This work captures a specific moment of travel in nineteenth-century Japan, documenting the physical reality of the Tokaido route as it appeared to those who walked it.
