A detailed architectural capriccio by Hendrick van Cleve III, featuring an obelisk set amidst classical ruins and a river scene.
This drawing by Hendrick van Cleve III presents an architectural fantasy, or capriccio, typical of the sixteenth-century Flemish interest in classical antiquity. The composition is dominated by a central obelisk mounted upon a substantial, ruinous base, which serves as a structural anchor for the surrounding scene. Van Cleve employs a light, precise pen technique to define the crumbling masonry and the distant city skyline, while subtle brown washes provide a sense of atmospheric depth across the river and the rolling hills beyond.
Van Cleve was a member of a prominent family of painters from Antwerp. His work often reflects the influence of his travels in Italy, where he studied the remains of Roman architecture. In this piece, the artist combines observed classical elements with imaginative construction. The foreground features small figures engaged in daily activities near the water, providing a sense of scale against the monumental ruins. The inclusion of a bridge, a domed structure, and a distant harbour suggests a synthesis of various Mediterranean motifs rather than a depiction of a specific site.
The drawing demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex spatial arrangements within a single frame. The use of thin, delicate lines allows for the inclusion of numerous details, from the texture of the stone to the small boats navigating the river. This work offers a view into the sixteenth-century fascination with the past, where the remnants of ancient civilisations were integrated into contemporary visual narratives. The monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the structural geometry and the interplay of light and shadow across the architectural forms, rather than on colouristic effects. It remains a fine example of the period's draughtsmanship and its preoccupation with the intersection of nature and human construction.
