A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting the station of Numazu with Mount Fuji in the background.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the station of Numazu, the thirteenth stop along the Tokaido road. It belongs to the Reisho Tokaido series, a later iteration of the artist's fascination with the route connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition is dominated by the imposing presence of Mount Fuji, which occupies the upper left quadrant. Its snow-capped peak contrasts with the layered, muted blue-grey mountain ranges that recede into the distance.
In the foreground, the artist presents a flat, marshy terrain where small figures traverse the path. The middle ground features a cluster of trees and buildings, rendered with precise, delicate lines. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft ochre skies, slate blues, and muted greens to convey the atmosphere of a quiet day. Hiroshige employs a balanced arrangement, using the horizontal lines of the water and the verticality of the trees to guide the viewer's eye across the scene. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige, particularly in the subtle gradations of the sky and the clarity of the architectural details. This work provides a view of the Japanese countryside during the Edo period, capturing the intersection of human activity and the natural environment. The Reisho Tokaido series is distinct for its use of the reisho (clerical) script in the cartouches, which gives the series its common name. The print remains a representative example of the Ukiyo-e tradition, focusing on the observation of travel and the changing seasons.
