A striking 1923 lithograph by George Bellows, capturing a female figure in profile with expressive, gestural mark-making and deep tonal contrasts.
George Bellows, a central figure in early twentieth-century American art, produced this lithograph in 1923. The work captures a standing female figure in profile, rendered with the expressive, gestural mark-making that defined his later graphic output. Bellows utilised the lithographic medium to explore the interplay of light and shadow across the human form, creating a sense of volume through dense, layered charcoal-like strokes.
The figure is positioned in a quiet, introspective pose, with one arm crossing her chest and the other resting behind her back. Bellows avoids idealised proportions, opting instead for a grounded, physical presence. The background remains largely atmospheric, consisting of smudged, textured tones that push the figure forward into the viewer's space. This approach reflects his interest in the raw, unvarnished reality of his subjects, a trait often associated with the Ashcan School, though here applied to the intimate setting of the studio.
Technically, the print demonstrates Bellows's mastery of the lithographic stone. He manipulated the grease crayon to achieve a wide range of tonal values, from the deep, velvety blacks of the shadows to the soft, scraped-back highlights on the shoulder and hip. The composition is balanced and direct, focusing entirely on the anatomical structure and the weight of the body. The artist's initials, 'GB', are visible in the lower right corner, a common feature in his limited edition prints. This piece offers a clear look at the artist's process, showing how he translated the immediacy of a sketch into a finished, reproducible work of art. It remains a fine example of American printmaking from the interwar period, demonstrating a focus on form and light that avoids unnecessary ornamentation.
