Beschreibung
A striking lithograph by Jean Arp featuring biomorphic, abstract forms in a balanced composition of black, orange, and blue.
Jean Arp, a founding member of the Dada movement in Zurich, developed a unique visual language based on biomorphic abstraction. This work, titled 'Not far from the sun, the moon and the stars', exemplifies his interest in organic forms that suggest growth, cellular structures, or celestial bodies without explicitly representing them. Arp sought to create art that functioned like nature itself, rather than art that merely imitated the appearance of the natural world.
The composition is defined by a stark contrast between the solid, dark, irregular form and the bright, circular orange shape positioned against a muted blue background. The black shape possesses a fluid, almost amoebic quality, characteristic of Arp's later graphic work. By stripping away representational detail, Arp invites the viewer to engage with the balance of mass, colour, and negative space. The title provides a poetic frame for the image, suggesting a cosmic scale while the visual elements remain grounded in the artist's signature vocabulary of simplified, rounded silhouettes.
Arp's approach to printmaking often involved a reduction of form to its most essential state. This lithograph demonstrates his mastery of flat colour planes and clean edges, techniques that allow the viewer to focus on the interplay of the shapes. The work avoids the rigid geometry of some of his contemporaries, opting instead for a softer, more intuitive arrangement. It is a clear example of his ability to evoke a sense of movement and life through minimal means. This print remains a representative piece of his mid-twentieth-century output, reflecting his ongoing exploration of the relationship between the human imagination and the fundamental structures of the universe.
