Beschreibung
A domestic scene set in ancient Rome, depicting a woman concealing a visitor behind a curtain while another figure watches from a nearby table.
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, a Dutch painter who settled in Britain, produced Not at Home in 1898. This work displays his characteristic attention to archaeological detail and the domestic lives of ancient Roman citizens. The scene depicts a woman standing in a doorway, holding back a heavy curtain to conceal a man behind it. To the right, a second figure sits at a small table, observing the situation with a knowing expression. The composition relies on the tension between the hidden visitor and the composed, watchful figure in the foreground.
Alma-Tadema was celebrated for his ability to render textures, particularly marble, metal, and textiles. In this painting, the deep red of the woman's stola contrasts with the muted, earthy tones of the curtain and the surrounding stone architecture. The floor features a mosaic inscription, a common device in his work to ground the scene in a specific historical context. The lighting is controlled, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the three figures. The painting avoids grand historical narratives, choosing instead to focus on a private, anecdotal moment. This approach was typical of his later career, where he moved away from larger compositions to smaller, more intimate domestic scenes. His technical precision ensures that every element, from the jewellery worn by the woman to the carved furniture, is rendered with clarity. The work remains a fine example of the Victorian fascination with the classical world, presented through a lens of contemporary social manners and domestic intrigue.
