A classic High Renaissance work by Titian, depicting the encounter between Christ and Mary Magdalene in a serene, atmospheric Venetian setting.
Titian painted Noli me tangere around 1514, during his early career in Venice. The work depicts the biblical encounter between the resurrected Christ and Mary Magdalene. Christ, dressed in a white loincloth and holding a hoe, gestures away from the kneeling Magdalene, who reaches towards him. The Latin title translates to 'do not touch me', reflecting the moment Christ instructs her not to hold him as he has not yet ascended to the Father.
The composition is divided between the figures in the foreground and the expansive Venetian countryside behind them. A large tree anchors the left side of the frame, creating a vertical axis that balances the horizontal movement of the figures. The background features a rolling terrain, a distant town, and a soft, atmospheric sky. Titian uses a palette of muted greens, earth tones, and the deep crimson of Magdalene's dress to create a sense of natural harmony. The light appears to emanate from the horizon, casting long shadows and softening the contours of the figures.
This painting demonstrates the influence of Giorgione, particularly in the integration of the figures into the surrounding environment. The focus is on the emotional tension of the encounter, rendered through the subtle gestures and expressions of the two subjects. The work is currently held in the collection of the National Gallery in London. It remains a clear example of the Venetian school's approach to colour and light, where the atmosphere is as important as the narrative itself. The brushwork is precise yet fluid, allowing for the textures of the fabric and the foliage to emerge with clarity. This print captures the tonal shifts and the depth of the original oil painting, providing a faithful representation of Titian's early mastery.
