Beschreibung
A serene fresco depicting the encounter between Mary Magdalene and the resurrected Christ, painted by Fra Angelico for the convent of San Marco.
This work is a fresco from the convent of San Marco in Florence, painted by Fra Angelico during his tenure there. The scene depicts the biblical encounter between Mary Magdalene and the resurrected Christ in a garden setting. The composition is contained within a rounded arch, a common feature of the monastic cells for which these works were created.
Fra Angelico employs a clear, measured approach to the figures. Mary Magdalene kneels on the left, her posture conveying a sense of longing and recognition. Christ stands to the right, holding a garden tool, which serves as a visual reference to the biblical description of him being mistaken for a gardener. His white robes are rendered with soft, flowing folds, contrasting with the more structured, earthy tones of the surrounding landscape. The background features a field of wheat and a collection of trees, painted with a degree of botanical observation that was characteristic of the artist's work.
The palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, greens, and the pale white of Christ's garments to create a sense of quietude. The light appears even and diffused, lacking the dramatic shadows that would become more common in later Renaissance painting. This work reflects the function of the San Marco frescoes, which were intended to aid the monks in their private devotions and meditations. By placing the sacred event within a recognisable, albeit idealised, natural environment, the artist brings the narrative into a space that feels accessible to the viewer. The lack of complex architectural perspective allows the focus to remain entirely on the interaction between the two figures, capturing a moment of spiritual transition.
