A fine art print of the iconic Tang Dynasty handscroll by Han Gan, depicting a spirited horse tethered to a post, complete with historical seals.
Night-Shining White is a celebrated handscroll attributed to the Tang Dynasty painter Han Gan. The work depicts a spirited horse, tethered to a post, rendered with a focus on the animal's muscular form and expressive temperament. Han Gan was active during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong and gained recognition for his ability to capture the essence of horses, which were highly valued in the imperial court for their military and symbolic importance.
The composition features the horse in a dynamic, slightly agitated pose, contrasting with the restraint of the tether. The ink work demonstrates a mastery of line, using varying pressure to define the horse's anatomy and the texture of its coat. The scroll is covered in numerous red seals and inscriptions added by later collectors and emperors, documenting its passage through centuries of Chinese history. These marks provide a physical record of the scroll's provenance, reflecting the high esteem in which it was held by successive generations of connoisseurs.
This print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original ink wash. The horse is depicted with a sense of vitality, its eyes wide and its posture suggesting a readiness for movement despite the restraint of the post. The surrounding calligraphy and seals are integral to the presentation, framing the central figure within a broader historical context. As a piece of classical Chinese art, it offers a window into the aesthetic priorities of the Tang period, where the depiction of horses was a primary subject for court artists. The work remains a primary example of the tradition of horse painting, valued for its technical precision and the artist's observation of equine anatomy.
