Beschreibung
New Romney’s church rises above the low town and open fields, giving the evening view a warm, settled character, leaving the view open, calm and easy to remember.
The long stone church stands beside a broad watercourse, with its tower and nave reflected in the still surface. Reeds and grasses line the near bank, while houses form a low strip beyond the church. The sky is coloured pink and gold as the sun drops over the fields.
New Romney grew as a Cinque Port, and its inland position reflects the changing coastline of Romney Marsh. The church tower and waterway bring that relationship into view, with the level fields stretching behind the town. Anyone familiar with the marsh can recognise the wide, low horizon and the quiet evening light settling over the grassland.
