A sensitive etching by Dutch master Jozef Israëls, depicting a woman focused on the task of mending a fishing net.
Jozef Israëls, a leading figure of the Hague School, frequently turned his attention to the lives of Dutch fishing communities. This etching, titled Nettenboetster, captures a quiet, domestic moment of labour. The subject is a woman seated in profile, her head bowed as she focuses on the repair of a fishing net. Her posture is one of concentration, a common theme in Israëls' work, which often sought to document the dignity found in everyday tasks.
The technique employed here relies on expressive, rapid line work. Israëls uses varying densities of cross-hatching to define the form of the figure and the texture of the net. The background remains largely suggested, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the woman and her work. The light source appears to come from the left, casting soft shadows across her shoulders and the folds of her clothing. This approach to light and shadow, often referred to as tonalism, is characteristic of the Hague School's interest in atmospheric effects and emotional resonance.
Unlike the highly polished academic paintings of the period, this etching retains a sense of immediacy. The visible marks of the needle on the copper plate provide a direct connection to the artist's hand. By choosing to depict a net mender, Israëls draws attention to the essential, repetitive work that supported the coastal economy. The composition is balanced, with the diagonal line of the net extending towards the right, creating a sense of movement within the stillness of the scene. This print offers a glimpse into the social history of the Netherlands during the late nineteenth century, presented through a lens of quiet observation rather than idealisation.
