A detailed photographic print of a traditional Japanese wooden netsuke, depicting a laughing figure with elongated limbs.
This print captures a netsuke, a small, functional sculpture from Japan. Historically, these objects served as toggles for the sagemono, a container suspended from the obi sash of a kimono. Because traditional Japanese garments lacked pockets, the netsuke allowed the wearer to secure personal items such as tobacco pouches, writing implements, or medicine boxes.
The figure depicted is a man with exaggerated, elongated limbs and a prominent, rounded abdomen. His expression is one of mirth, with a wide grin and a hand raised to his head in a gesture of casual reflection or amusement. The carving demonstrates the technical skill required to produce such miniature works, with attention given to the texture of the loincloth and the smooth, polished surface of the wood.
Netsuke were crafted from various materials, including boxwood, ivory, and lacquer. This specific example highlights the tradition of wood carving, where the artist worked with the grain to define the musculature and facial features of the subject. The form is compact, designed to be handled and viewed from multiple angles. While these objects were utilitarian in origin, they functioned as miniature canvases for the carver to display wit, narrative skill, and observation of daily life. The figure's posture and proportions suggest a character from folklore or a caricature of a common labourer, reflecting the social humour prevalent in Edo-period art. This print offers a clear view of the craftsmanship involved in these small-scale sculptures, preserving the detail of the original carving for contemporary study.
